Do You Need a Checkup?
Regular visits to an internal medicine specialist can help you stay healthy.

Does a healthy adult need to see a doctor regularly? Even for healthy individuals, visiting an internal medicine specialist for routine and preventive care is one of the most important things you can do for your health and overall well-being, say the physicians at Internal Medicine of Auburn.

"People often think that physicians who specialize in internal medicine treat only internal complex diseases, and mainly seek our help when they feel sick," says Jill Turner, M.D., internal medicine specialist at ARMC. "As primary care physicians [PCPs] we do treat people for a wide range of medical conditions. Familiarity with our patients' medical histories and other pertinent factors helps us identify if they are at risk for health issues."

An Ounce of Prevention
The physicians emphasize the benefits of good health habits. "We encourage people to eat a nutritious, well-balanced diet, exercise on a regular basis, maintain a healthy weight and quit smoking," says her colleague, Lijo Thomas, M.D., also an internal medicine specialist at ARMC. "People are living longer but some have health problems that could either have been prevented or treated earlier. Regular checkups are vital."

Help with Early Detection
Heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and osteoporosis are medical conditions that all share a common tendency: often these are silent diseases. During routine physical examinations, your PCP may perform several appropriate tests, including a pap test. Early detection of a disease can help you avoid complications and receive prompt treatment.

Personalized Care
Establishing long-lasting relationships with their patients is something for which the group strives. A good doctor-patient relationship is vital for accurate diagnosis and compliance so that treatment plans can be followed.

"We take time to listen to our patients' concerns in order to understand what is affecting them. We try to educate our patients about their conditions and help them select appropriate treatment options. We work together to plan for their needs," says Dante Arranza, M.D., internal medicine specialist at ARMC.
