Neurosurgical Care for Brain and
Spine Issues

Patients suffering from acute brain or spine disorders can get the specialized care they need at ARMC. Neurosurgeons Christopher Smythies, M.D., and Jacob Young, M.D., provide neurosurgical evaluations and care for Auburn-area residents.

Emergency Brain Surgery
The neurosurgeons are available to evaluate patients who suffer ruptured aneurysms, bleeding in the brain and other acute problems. This includes emergency brain surgery and other services as part of ARMC's stroke program.

"We can address acute brain disorders promptly at ARMC so that patients don't have to travel to another facility out of the area," Dr. Smythies says. "That's good news for the community because patients are more likely to have better outcomes when they receive fast and appropriate care."

We've Got Your Back
Patients with ruptured lumbar or cervical disks, degenerative spine disease, spinal stenosis, fractured vertebrae, pinched nerves and other painful and debilitating spine conditions can get the surgery they need at ARMC. Some of the procedures performed at the hospital include:

  • Fusion procedures. Surgeons use small screws, rods and donor bone grafts to fuse vertebrae in the lumbar or cervical spine.
  • Dynamic stabilization. Doctors use special screws and flexible rods to limit motion in the spine and keep it in a more natural position. This procedure can help some patients with a degenerative disk disorder called spondylolisthesis.
  • Microdiscectomies. Doctors clear away disk material that pinches the nerve roots or the spinal cord.
  • Decompression laminectomy. Surgeons remove a portion of the bone above the spinal cord and any disk materials or thickened tissues that narrow the spinal canal.
  • Disk replacement procedures. Doctors extract diseased disks and replace them with artificial disks that help preserve function in the affected areas.
"We use newer techniques and make incisions as small as we can so that patients experience less pain and recover more quickly," Dr. Young says. "In most patients with back pain, we can diagnose the cause of their symptoms and design a treatment plan that helps ease their discomfort and makes it easier for them to carry on with their normal daily activities.
